    Experience the remarkable giant tortoises of Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, on a half-day excursion from Zanzibar. Dive into the crystal-clear waters for swimming and snorkelling, or simply relax and soak up the sun. Only a short 30-minute boat journey from Stone Town, Prison Island boasts a picturesque beach, pristine waters, and an intriguing past as a yellow fever quarantine station.

What To Expect

Travellers will have the opportunity to learn about the island's history. Discover the ruins of an old prison, which was originally intended to house rebellious slaves but was instead used as a quarantine station for yellow fever victims.

You'll visit the tortoise sanctuary, home to giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over 100 years old. Alongside these gentle giants, you can also observe other animals brought to Changuu Island, such as the tiny dik-dik antelope and colorful peacocks, making for a charming and diverse wildlife experience.

When you arrive at Nakupenda Sandbank, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the views, swim in the clear waters, and taste tropical fruits. A delicious seafood BBQ lunch will also be served on the Sandbank.
