When is the Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro?

When discussing the best time of year to climb Africa’s highest peak, it's important to note that Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. However, there are specific times of the year that are considered optimal for making the climb. At Haydar Experiences, we advise booking your trek six to twelve months in advance, especially during the drier seasons, as these are the busiest times of the year.

The Best Time To Climb

Kilimanjaro weather table showing the best times to climb Kilimanjaro measuring factors like Temperature, rainfall cloudiness and crowds.

Peak seasons - July to September, and January to February.

The best times to climb Kilimanjaro are during the warmest and driest periods: from December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October. These times offer the most favourable weather conditions for climbing.

December to Mid-March

  • January & February: These are two of the best months to climb Kilimanjaro. The weather is warm, but you may encounter showers and snow above 14,000 ft. The trails are busy, but the balance of good weather and fewer crowds compared to the mid-year period makes it a popular choice.

Mid-June to October

  • July to October: Although these months are drier, the conditions are colder. The likelihood of precipitation is lower, and the weather is usually sunny with fewer clouds, allowing for better views near the summit. However, trails are busy due to the summer holidays in the US and Europe, particularly on the Marangu and Machame routes. Book your trek six to twelve months in advance if you plan to climb during this period.

Off-Peak Seasons

Long Rainy Season (March to June)

  • End of March to Early June: It is not recommended to climb Kilimanjaro during these months due to wet and muddy trails. Snow is expected near Uhuru Peak, and clouds obscure the views. However, the trails are quieter, which might appeal to experienced hikers who don't mind the wet conditions.

Short Rainy Season (November to Early December)

  • November to Early December: Afternoon showers are common, but the mornings and evenings offer clear skies. The trails are wet and slippery, making this a less favorable time to climb. If you choose to hike during this period, we recommend the Rongai or Northern Circuit route as the northern side of Kilimanjaro is more sheltered with less precipitation.

Unique Experiences

Full Moon Hikes

Many climbers enjoy trekking during a full moon. The glaciers are illuminated, creating stunning scenery, and the moonlight improves visibility, especially during the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. To experience a full moon at the summit, start your hike five days before the full moon date. Due to high demand, ensure you book well in advance.

Conclusion

Over 30,000 people climb Kilimanjaro each year, so planning and booking in advance is crucial. There are advantages and disadvantages to climbing at different times of the year, but this guide should help you decide the best time for your adventure. Combining your Kilimanjaro trek with a Tanzania Serengeti safari tour or a Zanzibar travel package can provide a relaxing retreat after your climb.
